Jonas Labhart

Jonas Labhart is a saxophonist and composer with the focus on the value of collaboration in music.

After studying saxophone performance and pedagogy at Berklee College of Music and HMT Zurich, Jonas Labhart moved to New York to study Jazz Composition at William Paterson University with Jim McNeely and Rich DeRosa. During his three year long stay he not only obtained a Masters of Music in Jazz Composition but was also a member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop and conducted his piece's world premiere for Big Band at Merkin Hall New York. Other highlights include big band renditions of the tunes “How deep is the Ocean” inspired and composed for Rich Perry and “Just In Time” for Mulgrew Miller.

Back in Zurich he studied classical music theory and analysis at Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK. He currently teaches saxophone, composing & arranging, improvisation and Jazz music theory at the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK and the Musikschule Zürcher Oberland and leads workshops on composition at the Young Composers Project at Künstlerhaus Boswil.

Jonas Labhart’s journey with free improvisation started in New York with Saxophonist Daniel Carter’s Tompkins Parc Players which included a performance at the Stone. He is co-founder of the collective field*s (fields.onl) that inquires the self-empowerment of improvised music beyond musical ideologies and debates the question what improvisation is, what social and political context it deals with and which urgency it includes. As a member of the board of the Workshop for Improvised Music Zurich (www.wimmusic.ch) he helps to organize weekly concerts to influence the music scene in a sustainable way. In his hometown he organizes the Brachenorchester, an orchestra of free improvisation that aims to include people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and forge new sounds together.

As a composer and arranger his work ranges from jazz arrangements for orchestra to contemporary classical works for quarter-tone trumpet. He performed his music for a german rendition of the drama “August Osage County” and with art installation of Brigitt Lademann (wellenschall.ch).

Currently he works extensively with field*s (www.fields.onl) and develops a new system of collaborative composing, where he was able to get the famous composers Satoko Fujii (www.satokofujii.com) and Maria Baptist (mariabaptist.com) on board.

彼は故郷で自由な即興のためのオーケストラ、「Das Brachenorchester(空き地オーケストラ)」を設立した。
